Through this, my sixth National Geographic Travel Guide, I have come to realize how much National Geographic values my Mediterranean roots.

After a few weeks living in Rome the realization hits you that there are hidden corners, plazas and alleys where, above all else and beyond any foreign influence, the spirit of the Mediterranean culture is preserved through popular festivals and celebrations. Some of this hidden wonders sometimes become very sought after and chic neighborhoods.

Rome has the status of a global city. Rome ranked in 2014 as the 14th-most-visited city in the world, 3rd most visited in the European Union, and the most popular tourist attraction in Italy. Its historic centre is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
